Rodmatic combines green initiatives with greater productivity

Rodmatic is investing a significant amount of time, effort and money into improving its factory environment and its impact on the planet. Its recent initiatives include:

  • Installing a £30,000 standalone air filter in one unit to significantly reduce the oil mist emitted in the factory
  • Fitting Filtermist units to every machine in a second unit
  • Changing the way oil is fed into machines by using a customised Freddy Bowser fully sealed unit, eliminating the use of open oil bins and reducing oil waste.

The company is also working hard to achieve ISO 14001 and aims to achieve it in quarter three of this year.

Rodmatic celebrates significant growth in turnover

Rodmatic is celebrating achieving a 35% growth in turnover over the past year. This is a result of the company’s exceptional performance which means that it now manufactures more than 300,000 parts a week! As part of this, Rodmatic have increased their workforce by an additional seven members of staff.  Due to the high volume of parts being produced, the company is moving to automate secondary operations and, as part of this, have invested in a Vibratory Bowl Finishing Machine from PDJ Vibro Ltd. This can work 24 hours a day deburring components and helping to streamline manufacturing processes even further. With a sound-proof lid, it also helps to enhance health and safety within the facility.

Rodmatic has also invested in new equipment to increase efficiency, such as machine monitoring technology for more accurate insight into how the facility is working. Since this has been installed, the company has seen a 15% increase in machine hours. Rodmatic has also brought in a number of initiatives to improve its impact on the environment.

Rodmatic installs Star Micronics GB’s HFT

Rodmatic are proud to announce that they have installed Star Micronics GB’s revolutionary high frequency turning (HFT) software on their SV-32, SR-20RIII and SR-32J at their Reading-based facility. Star GB’s HFT software increases machine efficiency on difficult-to-chip materials. According to Star Micronics GB, “The software enables intermittent cutting on any linear axis which breaks up “stringy” swarf into more manageable, smaller chips.”

Rodmatic reaps the rewards of investment in PSL Datatrack system

Rodmatic is celebrating the impact of its PSL Datatrack production control system over the past year, with benefits including tighter control over production, improved quotation times for customers and the ability to meet order requirements more quickly and effectively.

In 2017, Rodmatic decided to invest in a new production control system that would give them much more effective management of their business. An existing system was being replaced and the new one needed to be up and running as quickly as possible with a smooth transition phase so that day-to-day business would not be compromised in any way. Already familiar with PSL Datatrack through both companies’ membership of the British Turned Parts Manufacturers Association (BTMA), Rodmatic selected the company to supply their modular software package as the replacement. One year later, that decision has helped the business make all-round improvements to its production processes and customer service.

Due to the expiry of the licence for the existing system and the fact that it was beginning to slow down and corrupt, Rodmatic needed a quick response from PSL Datatrack. In addition, the company also had to use a number of external databases alongside their old system in order to achieve the desired levels of control resulting in much more manual inputting of data. A more versatile and all-embracing system was therefore another requirement.

As a company, Rodmatic has always looked at new ways to improve the way it works and after reviewing its processes and listening to customer feedback, came to the conclusion that a new system would also benefit its business at every stage of the production process.

“We wanted a solution from a supplier that had a better understanding of the needs of our subcontract engineering business. As a BTMA Technical Member, we knew that PSL Datatrack had expertise, a good track record in our sector and there were also the advantages of the flexibility and customisation opportunities possible with their software,” says Martin Wilson, General Manager at Rodmatic.

From the date of the order confirmation, PSL Datatrack started to acquire a firm understanding of Rodmatic’s production control requirements. “Once these were understood, PSL Datatrack were able us to give us the benefits of their considerable experience in the subcontract engineering sector and indeed recommend improvements to our existing processes that would benefit not only us but also our customers,” says Martin.

From investing in the system to going live took just three months. During this period, PSL Datatrack provided assistance for a parallel run of both systems to ensure a smooth transition. Concise targeted training for the Rodmatic team also took place during this phase so that each member understood how the changeover would work. Ongoing technical support was provided as new challenges arose as a result of the change in software. “The PSL Datatrack team were incredibly helpful during this whole period,” says Martin.

Some twelve months down the line, Rodmatic can now assess how the change to PSL Datatrack has assisted their successful specialist CNC and volume production machining business. The company provides components to a range of customers from many different market sectors using materials as diverse as steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminium, titanium, nylon and plastics. Achieving consistent quality in both production and service within Kanban and Just-In-Time customer requirements as well as vendor-managed contracts is essential for Rodmatic.

“PSL Datatrack’s approach to running the business along a logical ‘Quote to Delivery’ way of thinking has been the most beneficial,” says Martin. It means that by using the software, Rodmatic can fully trace the progress of any order for any customer and has much tighter control over the whole production process. Within this, specific processes have been improved including Rodmatic’s ‘Order to Pay’ system which has been streamlined via integration of PSL Datatrack with the company’s existing Sage accounts package, enabling them to reduce the time spent on paperwork and administration.

The company also has much better visibility and traceability of its production performance thanks to PSL Datatrack’s Works Order reporting functions. A number of different reports are now being generated, including production running lists, to meet management’s specific requirements. From a documentation viewpoint, Rodmatic can easily hve changes made to various templates quickly and efficiently. There is no longer the need to create the “bolt on” access reports previously required to get a full picture of business performance as PSL Datatrack production control software covers everything needed. Rodmatic customers have also felt the benefits of the new system through improved quotation times and the ability to meet their order requirements more quickly and effectively.

Martin concludes: “Whilst we may have had some initial concerns about moving to a different software provider, these have been completely unfounded. PSL Datatrack’s knowledge of the industry and technical support cannot be faulted. The transition from our old system was as smooth as it could have been and we are now reaping the rewards of our investment.”

Rodmatic enhances production process with new ERP system

Rodmatic continues to enhance its production processes, this time with the introduction of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system from PSL Datatrack. The flexible, modular production control system is helping Rodmatic to streamline its entire production process, as well as providing faster and more accurate reporting for more informed decision-making. The change will remove the need for repetitive data entry and allow Rodmatic to combine its in-house systems with its Sage accounting system to reduce the time involved with paperwork and administration. Most importantly, the system will enable Rodmatic to meet customer requirements even more quickly and effectively.

Rodmatic’s Chairman, Brian Steatham, explains:

After reviewing our work processes and listening to feedback from our customers, we realised that a new ERP system would benefit our business at every stage of the production process. Rodmatic celebrates major US order

Rodmatic is celebrating securing a significant amount of work in the US. The company has succeeded in winning orders to the value of well over £1m. Following on from its first major order from the US in 2015, this is anticipated to increase to £3m within the next three years. Rodmatic’s stateside success should help to compensate for challenges caused by Brexit.

Rodmatic shapes new opportunities for the jewellery industry

Rodmatic is now applying its precision machining expertise to benefit the jewellery industry. With a 50-year track record serving the marine, motorsport, medical and other sectors, the team at Rodmatic have developed new approaches for providing the jewellery world with stunning, high quality parts. This venture is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to broaden its offering to new markets.

Pictured above are just two examples of the type of product which Rodmatic can turn around quickly and to an exceptionally high standard. The parts were made on one of Rodmatic’s Dugard Eagle 32 machines. The company’s extensive machine capacity means that it can respond to the most complex part requests. Rodmatic is able to turn around parts for jewellery companies in just one to three weeks and can accommodate volume if required. The company can also produce bespoke designs for an extra cost. This diversification continues Rodmatic’s long history of meeting the commercial demands of many different industries.

Rodmatic invests in more environmentally-friendly oil tanks

One of the highlights of an exciting year at Rodmatic was the replacement of our old oil tanks with more environmentally-friendly versions. But putting in this £30,000 investment earlier this year was no mean feat, as the “before” and “after” pictures show below!

First, the site had to be prepared…

As you can see, they’re a big improvement for the look of the site, as well as for the environment!

We are delighted to welcome two new apprentices to the Rodmatic team! As part of our commitment to developing our workforce for the future, we’re working in partnership with Reading College to recruit the right people for a number of exciting apprenticeships.

I felt right at home at Rodmatic from my first day. Everyone here is so friendly and they all seemed to know who I was. I don’t think my first day could have gone any better! Overall, I’ve found it really interesting to get to understand how the machines work. I would say that what I’ve enjoyed most so far is the people! I’m really grateful to Rodmatic for this opportunity. By the end of my three-year apprenticeship, I hope to be in a full-time role at Rodmatic.”

I applied originally for an Apprenticeship in Machine Setting, but when I was introduced to Quality, I really liked the sound of it so I chose that instead! I’ve found everyone at Rodmatic really, really nice. I have had intensive training and have learned a lot already.  My role is based around key daily activities which include subcontracting, setting up gauges, calibration, gauge calibration and more. I’m learning new things every day! I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and working towards a job as well as passing my college course.”
