Having invested in the flexibility of CNC sliding head technology, Rodmatic Hytek has won a contract to produce 30 variants of piston rod for a specialist automotive customer in batches that vary between seven and 200 parts a month.
The family of suspension components, produced out of chromed steel bar range up to 16 mm diameter by 280 mm long. Each part requires turning, threading at each end plus the milling of flats in a single operational cycle. Says sales director Bob Todd: "Our location at Reading, close to the specialist automotive and motorsport companies and with the recent investment in turn-mill centres has put us in a good position to build a close working relationship and provide a fast response service."
The components are produced on a recently installed Star SR20III CNC sliding head auto with programming performed off-line using Delcam's PartMAKER software. While initial quantities are to the order of 2,000 per month, this is expected to increase substantially as Rodmatic Hytek has been able to respond to produce batches as small as seven against a fast turnaround to meet any prototype and pre-production requirements.
